Nationwide Fun Run on Rizal's 150th birthday

July 19, 2011 marks the 150th birthday of our National Hero - Dr. Jose Rizal. During this day, everybody is invited to join the Department of Education (DepEd) as it will conduct a simultaneous event - the nationwide Fun Run.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro formally invited the public Tuesday to join the Department of Education (DepEd) in celebrating the 150th birth of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal this Sunday.

“We all know how our national hero pushed for the education of the Filipinos and I am sure that a century after his death that remains his aspiration,” said Luistro in a press conference.

The preparations for the said fun runs are now in full swing. The participants are invited to donate educational materials or volunteer time for education-related activities to benefit public schools nationwide.

Luistro said instead of participants paying registration fees, they are requested to bring donations or sign a pledge form stating what they can contribute to upgrade the standard of education in public schools.

During the nationwide fun run participants have a choice of 1-, 2-, or 3 kilometer walk or run. All the different divisions in the National Capital Region will have their fun run at the Quirino Grandstand in Luneta starting at 6 a.m.

As one of the employees of DepEd, I will certainly join the fun run during Rizal's birthday. What about you, are you joining this big nationwide event?

Let's run for a cause!
