Just last December 2011, hundreds of lives were taken because of the wrath of Bagyong Sendong in Iligan and Cagayan. Up to these days, many people were suffering physically and emotionally. Geologist insisted that mining was one of the reasons of this calamity and asking people to be cautious that this might happen again in Davao Oriental. Indeed, just last January 5, 2012 at 4:00 in the morning, landslide bashed at Pantukan Valley; 25 people died and 8 were missing. This area was being mined by small-scale miners, destabilized by bulldozing and other activities.
These calamities happened were results and effects of the undergoing activity of miners. Whether we accept it or not, mining was one of the reasons of this calamity aside from heavy rains spawned in the said area. Thus, this kind of unexpected situation is really enough for us to wake up and make a move. This situation is not a joke and this is reality; a reality that humans are the responsible of destructing the wonderful gift of God. That is, the results of abusing our nature only turned back to humans and the calamities experienced by many people are just reminders how the nature could make "a revenge" of our wrong doings. Shall we take this for granted? Shall we just open our ears and close our eyes of this tragic situation? Can we not start exercising our role to make sure that public safety is followed? These questions will be answered by us depending on how we respond to it. We cannot get away from a fact that there are many people (miners) who are not aware of the effects of mining or are they just ignoring it for selfish reasons? How about the lives of our next generation? Will you allow yourself be the reason of the hindrances of their rights to live peacefully with a full happiness? Look at your daughters, sons, wife, husband and the rest member of the family. Will you have an assurance that they will not be affected if calamities bash? Come to think of it.
How about your responsibility local officials? Are you exercising your role to give safety environment with your people? Is that your capability in service? If that is so, then why still wanting to serve when after all you cannot make an action for the common good. Life is precious and that we should take into consideration to what is good not just for the few of us but for ALL. Yes, for ALL!
This is not all about blaming you but for you to reflect and realize. Mindanao landslide took many lives. What we should bear on mind that this is not all about facing to what is present but facing to what will happen next or in the future. Read and read this article and try to reflect.
