The Dengue vaccine which showed a promising 56.5% overall efficacy based on the results of the first Asian dengue vaccine efficacy trial will probably be released on July 2015.
No exact date was announced but the Philippines' Department of Health (DOH) revealed on Thursday, July 18, 2014, that the vaccine has passed several trials using the standards established by the World Health Organization (WHO).
According to DOH Secretary Enrique T. Ona, 56.5% efficacy of the vaccine means that more than half of the subjects did not get dengue compared to the control group that did not receive the vaccine.
Based on the update released by DOH through the Official Gazette of the Philippines, the dengue vaccine has the potential to reduce up to 88.5% for the subject to develop dengue hemorrhagic fever. With that, there is a 67% reduction in the risk of hospitalization.
Ona stressed that the positive results of dengue vaccine efficacy trial has a great impact on public health due to high incidence of dengue in the country and its disruptive effect on the health system.
In the Philippines, there are already 31,088 dengue cases all over the country starting from January 1 to July 2, 2015.
