Those who are fond of watching the night sky will be amazed with the first "Super Full Moon" for 2014. This rare phenomenon will be observed this weekend starting Thursday night until the full moon on Saturday, July 12, 2014.
According to Jose Mendoza, the chief of PAGASA's Astronomical Publication Unit, a "super" full moon happens when the moon is in the orbit closest to the earth (lunar perigee) and it also coincides with the full moon.
This weekend, starting Thursday (July 10) up to Saturday (July 12), the moon will appear 10 percent bigger and brighter than ordinary moons.
"Its illumination on Thursday night was already 94 percent and we expect that it will reach by Saturday", Mendoza said.
The full moon will rise at 6:15 p.m. on Saturday and will set at 5:03 a.m. on Sunday. Its closest approach will be on July 13 at 8:28 a.m. at about 358,258 kilometers (km), Mendoza said.
During the occurrence of super moon, it is also expected that a spring tide will be experienced.
PAGASA forecasted that higher-than-average high tide, particularly along Manila Bay will reach as high as 1.46 meters around 10 a.m. on Sunday.
