How to Increase Alexa Rank?

As I installed Alexa Rank widget on my blog sometime after 2 months since it was active, my Alexa Rank was about 25,000,000+. That number has no value to me. I installed Alexa rank widget to my blog because I saw it from other blogs. As I compared the number from my blog to the number that appears to other blog which is older than mine and receiving more traffic, I became curious then - which Alexa rank is more valuable - is it the higher number or lower? Then I made some research through "googling" the keyword - "how to increase Alexa Rank" and I know from the different posts that I stumbled upon that the lower the Alexa Rank, the better.

What is Alexa Rank?

Alexa Rank is the system used in ranking websites or blogs based on the number of traffic that the blog or website receives from visitors who came to visit the site with Alexa toolbar. Therefore alexa toolbar is the consideration.

Here's the vivid definition of Alexa Rank:

The traffic rank is based on three months of aggregated historical traffic data from millions of Alexa Toolbar users and is a combined measure of page views and users (reach). As a first step, Alexa computes the reach and number of page views for all sites on the Web on a daily basis.
The main Alexa traffic rank is based on the geometric mean of these two quantities averaged over time (so that the rank of a site reflects both the number of users who visit that site as well as the number of pages on the site viewed by those users).

The Value of Alexa Rank - Why do we need to increase Alexa Rank?

If you are not planning to monetize your blog or website, never mind increasing your Alexa Rank. Like Pagerank, Alexa Rank is our additional gravity to pull the money available through blogging and making websites. Webmasters or bloggers who are monetizing their site or blog know all these things. If you have higher Pagerank and Alexa Rank, it will increase the value of your blog or website.

Blogsvertise, Text Links Ads, Review Me, Pay Per Post and Sponsored Reviews look at your Alexa Rank and Page Rank in determining the amount of money they are going to pay on blogvertising, text links advertising, reviewing a site, pay per posting, and sponsored reviewing of advertisers' sites or the products and services they offer.

A Short Story on my Alexa Rank

As I mentioned in the first paragraph of this article that I started with an Alexa ranking of more than 25 million but presently, as  I write this post, my Alexa rank is 1,220,190. Comparing the past and the present numbers, there's a very large margin. I was able to increase my rank up to that position in  just two or three months. Before I will celebrate my 1st Blogversary on October 31, 2010, i want to see this blog with an Alexa Rank of 300,000 or even higher.

How to improve alexa rank of your blog?

Before you are going to try the methods that I learned to be useful in boosting Alexa Rank, install Alexa Traffic Rank widget on your blog first. After installing the widget you can try the following methods:

1. Install Alexa toolbar in your browser. Go to Alexa.com and download a toolbar compatible with the browser you are currently using. Then set your blog as your home page. So that each time you update your site and view your posts, your visit will be counted.

2. Blog About Alexa Rank. If your post is lucky enough to land on Google's 1st page on SERP, chances are more people would visit your blog. Another good thing about this method is that most webmasters are using Alexa toolbar or widget on their site and like you, they are also searching on ways on how to increase Alexa rank.

3. Target webmaster as your audience in your posts. Some of the topics that webmasters are inclined to know are all about SEO and increasing Pagerank.

4. Pay Internet cafe owners so that they will install alexa toolbar on all their units and set your blog URL as the homepage.

5. Optimize your popular posts. Do your blog has popular post that consistently receives traffic from the search engines? Include a widget/graph at the bottom of the post, link to your Alexa post or use Alexa redirection on your internal URLs.

6. Create an Alexa category on your blog and use it to include any articles or news about Alexa. This acts as an easily accessible resource for webmasters or casual search visitors while helping you rank in the search engines.

7. Get Dugg or Stumbled. This usually brings massive numbers of visitors to your website and the sheer amount will have a positive impact on your Alexa Rank. Naturally, you’ll need to develop link worthy material.

8. Get friends to review and rate your Alexa website profile. Not entirely sure of its impact on rankings but it might help in some way.

9. Buy banners and links for traffic from webmaster forums and websites. A prominent and well displayed ad will drive lots of webmaster traffic to your website, which can significantly boost your rank.

10. Try Alexa auto-surfs. Do they work? Maybe for brand new sites. I think they are mostly suitable for new websites with a very poor Alexa rank. Note that there be problems when you try to use auto surfs alongside contextual ads like Adsense. They aren’t also long term solutions to improving your Alexa Rank so I suggest using it with caution.
