Cybercrime Costs: Google Crimes

Google, a company that is usually at the forefront of only good news in the internet and corporate world, has been connected to yet another instance of crime and fraud. Nothing is for certain yet, of course, but it is clear that the Seoul-based offices were in fact raided because of alleged crime. The facts will pan out in time, but the allegations are that Google has been limiting people's ability to access things on Android smartphones. This type of control or censorship is not allowed, but Google has been doing it anyway, according to sources. This could be a large blow to the internet giant since they will be in direct violation of people's rights.

It is not clear yet what the cost will be to Google. They will likely loose a fair bit in bad publicity. These kinds of things always lead to less customers, which can be very damaging in a world where ads are sold based off of how many people they will reach. If the ads will reach less people due to people avoiding Google, the ads will not sell for nearly as much money. Google could stand to lose millions of dollars in a situation like this, though things may turn out to be not quite that bad, especially if they are able to prove that they are innocent of the charges.

Recently, Google was involved in another instance of crime. They did not report their earnings that were made on American websites on which they sold ad space to Canadian pharmacies. They were also in violation of international laws when they allowed those pharmacies to post their ads at all. Nothing that has not yet been approved by the FDA can be sold in America. It cannot be shipped in from the other side of the border. The cybercrime costs for this were five hundred million dollars, as the government fined Google for breaking the law.

This is important because Google could now face another fine that is similar. If they have broken the law again, the government will have no choice but to act. This did happen in another country, so it remains to be seen what type of action will be taken. It also remains to be seen whether or not civilians will take Google to court and sue them, something that is currently happening in connection with the online pharmacy case.

The biggest problem that Google faces is that it is now a repeat offender. It can no longer hide behind a stance that it has only made a small mistake. The company's leaders can no longer claim that they should get off without a penalty since they were ignorant of the laws. They will now be viewed by the government as a company that does not care about following the laws when they get in the way of profits. This could mean that they have to pay even more money this time for the crimes that have allegedly been committed.
