Doubling Up on Your Scout Badges: Combine Work, Study and Extracurricular Experience

Today’s employment market is tougher than ever and many people are wondering how they can stand out from the crowd and get the job that they aspire to. A college degree is no longer a guarantee that you can walk into a job, and often new college graduates are competing with those who have both a degree and years of experience in their industry.

Set Yourself Apart by Maximizing your Value
If you want to get ahead in your career and be a leader of the pack, you need to do something to set yourself apart. This means that a degree, work experience, or good extracurricular experience are no longer good enough on their own. You need to combine them together so that as much of your life as possible is working towards maximizing your value to future employers.

Gaining Skills and Experience can be Fun!
This might seem like an impossible level of commitment, but it is possible. Take your recreation time: many people enjoy working on a hobby or volunteering with their spare time. These experiences and skills can be a valuable element of your resume.

For example, if you wish to start a career in webdesign and enjoy working with animals, volunteer with an animal shelter to redesign their website. You have done a good deed, met new and interesting people, and added to your portfolio. Similarly, try to take on leadership activities in your other hobbies. Even something like successfully obtaining sponsorship for your child’s Little-League team can show drive, initiative, and a track record of success.

Study while you Work with an Online Degree
Perhaps you are seeking a promotion at work, but you do not have the qualifications. You can’t afford to quit your job to go back to school, but this does not mean that a college degree is beyond your reach. An online business degree allows you to continue to work as you study, taking courses at your own pace in the evenings and weekends.

Not only will you end up with a degree, but the drive, commitment and time management skills that such an endeavor demonstrates is another element of your character that will impress employers and managers. Some companies will even finance such study for their employees.

Take all the Experience You can Get
If you are already in full time education, you need to do everything you can to gain real-world experience. Seek out internships, part-time jobs or freelance work in your industry. If you can’t find work experience, make your own – set up a blog where you report on or analyze developments and news in your preferred field and show your commitment to the industry.
Now that you know more about maximizing your employability from Guest Blogger, Michelle, expand your horizons and consider learning more about an online business degree.
