Time’s Not Gold for K to 12

More years, more learning, and more opportunities in the future are what the government had pictured out why they implemented this new law known as the Enhanced Basic education Act of 2013 or the K-to-12 Act which was signed by Pres. Benigno Aquino III as law last May 15, 2013.

K to 12 curriculum philippines
The Department of Education came up with a very good plan on how to develop and help the country and its citizens through quality education that would require additional years in school particularly six years of primary education, four years of Junior High School and two years of Senior High School.

We always say that time is gold. But this new law definitely deals with the saying, “Patience is a virtue”. In order to have brighter future, students need to study and exert more effort and time to be in school and acquire good education.

According to the president, with K to 12 they are making sure that adequate and useful skills are being imparted to students and this additional years specifically two years after fourth year high school will be intended to further improve their skills and talents in their chosen career path.

It was also said that students who completed the program will be equipped with skills, competencies and will be given certificates equivalent to a two-year college degree so parents will be relieved from the burden of spending in college for their children to land for a job especially those who can’t afford such. But pursuing a college degree will still remain an option for students who might want to take specialized training and education.

Despite all the advantages and benefits of K to 12, there are still lots of controversies and possible problems following this new law. School curricula both in public and private schools need to be changed in order to conform with K to 12 and more teachers must be hired and must undergo series of trainings. Bigger budget for education must also be allotted by the government for this project especially that new classrooms should be built to cater more students and more teachers are to be given salaries.

We often say that education is the key to success. The K to 12 program is seen to address the deficiency of the Philippine educational system and implementing this would possibly help students to be at par with the students in our neighboring countries and meet the standards of the international education criteria. In this way, Filipinos would be given more job opportunities especially if they can finish the program so with their tertiary education and be able to compete in the corporate world.

However, it is assumed that tuition rates in college will further increase as the government’s K to 12 will also mean abandonment for tertiary education. Because those who will finish their secondary education will be given certificates equivalent to a two-year college degree, it will entice other students to settle for that which might lead to a more exploitable labor as semi-skilled youths enter the labor force as early as 18 years old.

Lots of private organizations, students, teachers, parents and administrators are really against this program. No matter what and how the government presents this as a helpful tool for a brighter future, there are still flaws and disadvantages for everything. Others said this is an attack on labor and wages and will just worsen our unemployment problem but there are also those who believe and continue to have high hopes to the success of this K to 12 Act.

We all know that Philippines is a third-world country and even if we say that this K to 12 is a good program, still it will face many problems especially financially. In the first place, even without these additional years in school we can still acquire good education if we only have more classrooms and teachers to avoid having more than 40 students in one room. It will not be any more conducive to learning because more students would mean smaller space, hotter area and ineffective communication between the teacher and his/her students. It will be more burdensome for teachers to teach and be effective with this kind of situation and this is one of the many problems that the government might want to solve first.

But whether this K to 12 is beneficial or not to Filipinos, we still hold our own future. Education is really very important because knowledge is power. You’ll have an edge to those uneducated people especially in terms of job opportunities and many more, and if we want to have more of it, we need to spend more too not just money alone but time as well.
